Ohanaeze Youths Condemn DSS Siege On NASS

Ohanaeze Ndigbo youths have condemned Tuesday’s siege on the national assembly by hooded operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, saying it is a threat to the nation’s democracy.

We note with serious concern, the growing attack on constitutionalism in Nigeria and brazen acts of impunity on elected officials. We frown at this act and totally condemn Tuesday’s siege on national assembly by the DSS.

“In the last one month, a magistrate court was sacked, disobedience of court orders was justified by the Attorney General of the Federation and there are growing cases of high handedness by security officials.

“These acts point to a despotic rule not democracy and a gradual decline of the Nigerian state to anarchy. Igbo youths condemn these illegal acts as they are despicable and serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

“The action of the Department of State Services, Nigeria Police and other security forces in barricading the gates of the National Assembly and preventing the people from doing their job as an independent arm of government is condemnable.

“These actions are unconstitutional and negate Nigeria’s democratic development which is clocking almost 20 years in great crisis and danger.

“Nigeria’s constitution and laws and the National Assembly rules define clear procedures for removal of presiding officers. Seeking to forcibly and violently interfere with the leadership of the National Assembly amount to dictatorship.

“Nigerians fought very hard against the military dictatorship that seized power in December, 1983 in a coup led by General Muhamadu Buhari and enthroned democracy in 1999.

It is our concern that “Tuesday’sbarricade of the national assembly was one of the series of undemocratic actions by the executive arm of government which cast doubts on Nigeria’s practice of democracy.”
